Sewing Machine Questions

QAs a beginner, what sewing machine should I purchase?
Based on the tests, the top two machines for absolute beginners are the Brother CS7000X and the Singer Heavy Duty 4423. If you prefer computerised controls, a large number of stitches and accessories that are ready to use, then the Brother CS7000X is better. If you prefer a mechanical machine that can manage different types of fabrics without hassle, the Singer 4423 is a better option. They are both covered in great detail on this site. For those not sure about the brand, our Brother vs Singer comparison covers the main differences after 12 years of testing of both ranges.
QWhat is the difference between a mechanical and a computerised sewing machine?
Mechanical machines are operated by physical dials and levers to adjust stitch selection, stitch length and the tension. They are easier to maintain, have fewer parts that can go bad, and can last longer for the same price. A wider range of automatic features and stitches are controlled by computerised machines, which feature digital controls and LCD screens. They are typically easier for novices to learn on, as there are fewer adjustments that the machine has to make. It will depend on your most common sewing tasks and your preference for simplicity and durability or features and automation.
QBrother or Singer better?
There is no clear winner between the two brands. Singer is a winner when it comes to motor power, mechanical durability and heavy fabric performance. Brother's favorite features include the variety of stitches, accessories included, and the price range of $200–$400. Brother is the more popular brand for those who sew mostly cotton and mixed fabrics. If you are a sewist who is frequently using denim, canvas or layers of fabric, Singer's Heavy Duty range is more reliable. We've written an entire comparison of Brother vs Singer on the site that details all the big differences that we've experienced with both brands.
QHave you ever read about sewing machines that you've tried?
Yes. All sewing machines reviewed on MariaSew.com have been tried and tested by Maria on actual projects. The Brother CS7000X was tested for 30 days. Other machines were tested on at least three different fabrics, usually cotton, denim and a stretch fabric, before a decision was made. We do not publish reviews based on specifications or manufacturer claims.
QWhich one is the best sewing machine for quilting?
The Brother HC1850 is the ideal choice for beginner quilters because it provides the best balance of features and affordability. The Janome 4120QDC is the recommended machine for intermediate quilters — the throat space, speed control and free motion performance are much improved over the entry level models. If you are a serious quilter who creates multiple large quilts, the Brother PQ1600S is a straight-stitch quilting machine that offers professional consistency. All three levels are explained in detail in our best quilting sewing machine guide.
QHow do I know which sewing machine needle to use?
The needle size and type should be appropriate for the fabric you are sewing. Most woven fabrics can be used with universal needles. The ballpoint needles are particularly important for knit and stretch fabrics as they push between the fibres of the fabric instead of penetrating them, thus avoiding skipped stitches. Denim needles have a thicker shaft and sharp end to pierce through thick woven layers. Microtex needles are used for fine woven fabrics and for precision topstitching. The size of the needle should be based on the weight of the fabric — a size 70 is used for light-weight fabric, a size 90 or 100 is used for heavy cotton or denim.
QWhat is causing my sewing machine to skip stitches?
In almost all cases, skipped stitches occur due to one of four reasons. The needle is the wrong type for the fabric — most often on knit fabrics, a ballpoint is used instead of a universal needle. Needle is dull or bent — need to be changed after every 8–10 hours of sewing or after every time hitting a pin. Not threaded — even if one thread is over one guide that is not correct, the machine will skip. The tension is not set for the fabric weight. Always reset the machine with a new needle and thread before changing the tension.
QWhat is a serger and do I need one?
A serger machine is a different type of machine. It cuts the fabric edge, rolls it in thread and stitches it in one go, creating the clean finishes you see within the inside of ready to wear garments. Most home sewing projects don't require a serger, but if you make clothes on a regular basis, it will make finishing garments easier and better. In this serger vs sewing machine guide, we'll explore the practical differences and determine if it's worth investing in a serger for your sewing.

Questions about Macrame and Craft

QI have not ever knotted before. Where do I start?
The square knot is the base of most macrame patterns, so you should begin with it. Take four pieces of cord, fold them in half and tie them to a dowel or branch. The two outside cords are working cords and the two inside cords are filler cords. Cross left working cord over the filler cords and under right working cord. Next, pass the right working cord under the filler cords and up through the loop on the left. Tighten by pulling both working cords outwards. Repeat on the other side and you will have one full square knot. We have macrame wall hanging patterns that show you how to do this step by step with easy instructions for beginners.
QFor macrame wall hangings, which cord should I use?
The most common starting point is single strand twisted cotton cord ranging from 3mm to 5mm in thickness. It is easy to keep knots clean, unravel and comb out for fringe, and is available in natural and dyed colours. Three strand braided cord is stronger and more durable, but not as good for fringe work. For wall hangings, 3mm single strand twisted cotton is the most appropriate because it is easy to knot and has a nice look.
QWhat is the time required to create a macrame wall hanging?
It takes 3–5 hours for a beginner to create a small wall hanging using basic knots (about 30cm wide). It takes 6 to 10 hours to make a medium wall hanging (50 to 60cm wide), depending on the complexity of the pattern. A large statement piece, 80cm or wider, may require 15–30 hours or more. Once the core knots are muscle memory, the time drops significantly — most beginners will find their pace to be about double after their second project.

We focus on items that are essential for the lives of the women who read MariaSew.com: kitchen appliances, cleaning supplies, home comfort items, and sewing-related items such as cutting tools and irons. QWhat vacuum cleaner is best for pet hair?
For pet owners who have to deal with cat or dog hair on carpet, the Bissell CleanView Swivel Pet 2252 is the best value. For whole-home versatility including stairs and upholstery the Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV356E is the recommendation. The Bissell Featherweight is a great second vacuum for quick daily cleanups between deep cleanings. We've tested all five vacuum cleaners and have honest reviews for each.
QAre your kitchen appliance reviews based on personal testing?
All appliances that are reviewed on MariaSew.com are tested under actual home use conditions before they are added to a guide. Coffee makers are tested for coffee quality over several brews, air fryers for cooking performance, and stand mixers for baking performance, among other tests for kitchen appliances. If during the testing process a limitation of a product was discovered, it is explicitly mentioned in the review even if the reviewer was not affiliated with the product.
